This past week Judy and I had the opportunity to travel to Maryland and paddle Mallows Bay on the tidal Potomac River.  Mallows Bay, only 35 miles or so from Washington, DC and near the small town of Nanjemoy, Maryland, is the location of the “Ghost Fleet of the Potomac,” where approximately 200 shipwrecks lie just above the water at low tide.  (YES!  You read that correctly!  Over 200 ships – the largest collection of historic shipwrecks in the Western Hemisphere.)  Read more about Mallows Bay here if you are intrigued.

As soon as I read about this place, the idea of paddling there grabbed me; as I often said (in reference to a line spoken by Kahn in Star Trek II), it “tasked me,” for reasons I didn’t fully understand until we were there and learned more of its history.
